Catabolism

Catabolism is also called dissimilation. ln this process, there occurs the breaking down of complex molecule into simpler molecules and chemical energy release . The reaction that releases chemical energy is called exoterm. One example of exoterm reaction (catabolism) is respiration.

Respiration is the process of energy release through chemical reaction with or without the presence of oxygen. Based on the free oxygen requirement, respiration is distinguished into aerobic respiration and anaerobic respiration.


Aerobic Respiration
Aerobic respiration requires free oxygen from air. It occurs through three stages

glycolysis
Krebs cycle
electron transport

Three Stages of cellular respiration, glycolysis, Krebs cycle, and electron transport.

These stages occur in different places. Glycolysis takes place in cytoplasm, Krebs cycle takes place in mitochondria matrix, and electron transport takes place in membrane of mitochondria.
