What is Metabolism?

Food provides nutrient that will be be used by living organism as an energy source, including the energy for doing the exercise as you can see in the figure. However the food we eat does not produce energy directly in our body. The nutrients can function as energy provider after being broken by metabolism process. How does the metabolism process occur in the body?

Metabolism is the whole series of chemical reaction occurring within cell of a living organism. It consists of two processes, anabolism and catabolism. Anabolism is a series of chemical reaction which synthesizes complex substances from the simpler ones. Conversely, catabolism is a series of chemical reaction which breaks down complex substances into simpler substances accompanied by a release of energy, the adenosine triphosphate

(ATP) ATP is high energy chemical compound that has unstable bond. Consequently, it is easy to hydrolyze ATP into ADP. The conversion of ATP into ADP will release energy as much as 7.3 kcal/mol ATP.

on both metabolism processes, whether anabolism or catabolism, it is frequently influenced by other compound which is called enzyme. Therefore, when we are talking about metabolism, we first need to understand about enzyme. What is enzyme?
